Big Four

Big Four
1) The major High-Street or commercial banks in the UK: Barclays (now incorporating the Woolwich), Lloyds TSB, HSBC (formerly Midland), and NatWest (now owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland). In terms of market capitalization the four were joined in the 1990s by Abbey National (now Abbey) and the Halifax (now HBOS following its merger with the Bank of Scotland), which changed their status from building society to banks.
2) The four largest firms of accountants in the world, i. e. Deloitte and Touche, Ernst and Young, KPMG, and Price WaterhouseCooper.
3) In Japan, the four largest securities houses: Daiwa, Nikko, Nomura, and Yamaichi.
